The pressure at the bottom of the Mariana Trench was crushing-over 15,000 pounds per square inch. But the research station Abyss had been built to withstand it. For three years, Dr. Lena Martinez had lived there, studying bioluminescent creatures and the strange geological activity of the ocean floor.

Tonight, the activity was not geological.

"Command, this is Abyss. I'm picking up a signal. It's artificial."

"Copy, Abyss. Can you identify the source?"

Lena studied her screens. The signal was coming from deeper than the trench, from a rift in the Earth's crust.

"Negative. But it's moving."

The signal grew stronger, then resolved into a shape-a vessel, sleek and organic, its hull pulsing with blue light.

"Command, I have visual. It's not one of ours."

The vessel stopped above the Abyss, its lights illuminating the station. A hatch opened, and a figure emerged-humanoid, but not human. Its skin was pale, its eyes black.

"We have come for the artifact," it said, its voice echoing in Lena's mind.

"What artifact?" Lena asked.

The figure pointed to the ocean floor. "Beneath this station, there is a device. It has been sleeping for a million years. We must awaken it."

Lena hesitated. "What does it do?"

"It will save our world. Or destroy yours."

The figure swam toward the rift, disappearing into the darkness.

Lena looked at her crew, at the impossible choice.

"We follow it," she said.

She suited up and swam into the abyss, the blue light guiding her.

The future of both worlds hung in the balance.

And Lena Martinez was at the center of it all.
